The Traders Cup has indeed come a long way from its humble beginnings back in the early nineties when it kicked off as an alternative to the botched Nigeria 95 soccer championship and to pacify Nigerian football lovers, most of whom where Traders from all walks of life. The franchise has since then gone from strength to strength as it saw a resurgence in 2005 to 2008 under the collaboration of AMC International Limited and IDP Sports.
The tournament was restricted to markets within Lagos State with markets like Idumota market, Alaba International market, Balogun market to mention a few participating in subsequent editions. However, over the years, there has been calls in various quarters within the Traders community to expand the tournament nationwide for a more national spread and inclusiveness and that prayer has been answered as the organisers has announced that the traders cup is going national with a bigger and better 2020 national edition to kick off in the month of May.
The success of traders cup at the grassroots football development level cannot be overemphasized as it has given some traders the opportunity to showcase their otherwise undiscovered football talent in the absence of a structured national system and indeed some players who participated in previous editions have been invited for trials with various clubs home and abroad.
The organizers are also calling on corporate bodies for partnership and participation as the event offers great opportunities for brand exposures and endorsements as media coverage and promotions will be at a national scale.
